Comprising everyday items and tools made of materials such as stone, pottery and charcoal, the artifacts were found in May near Binmao Village in the southeastern Taiwan county. This is the third a major find has been uncovered in the area.
Kuo Su-chiu, leader of the research team from Academia Sinica’s Institute of History and Philology, said the artifacts date from the same period as those recovered from the nearby Chiu-hsiang-lan Site.
“It is important that work on the project near where the artifacts were discovered be halted temporarily as the area may contain other hidden cultural assets, she said.
In response, an official from the Directorate General of Highways said construction will be suspended around the discovery area for 10 months. “We will also cooperate with Academia Sinica after it releases an initial report on the artifacts in August.”
Liu Chen, director of Taitung County Government’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs, said the site is an exciting and culturally significant discovery, adding that the bureau will assist the researchers going forward. (DF-CM-JSM)
